The Sunny Hills boys basketball team ended the season with a challenge against the Villa Park Spartans, losing 36-67 on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at home.
“I knew it wouldn’t be an easy game against Villa Park,” head coach Joe Ok said. “Still, I expected our team to put their best effort in and work.”
The game started with high energy as guard sophomore Immanuel Lin opened the scoring with three points in the first thirty seconds. However, Villa Park responded immediately with a relentless offensive attack, outscoring Sunny Hills by 22 points. The Lancers struggled to find their rhythm but scored four more points, bringing the scoreboard to 7-22 by the end of the first quarter.
“I was becoming depressed because we couldn’t score,” Lin said.
The offensive pressure from Villa Park remained intense through the second quarter. While guard senior Pierrce Sandle scored two points and guard junior Rian Bang chipped in a three-point basket, the Lancers went into the locker room at halftime at 12-37.
During the halftime break, the Little Lancers, kindergarten to eighth-grade students who participated in a workshop with the SH Dance Production team, entertained the home crowd, while Ok looked to rally his team.

Guard junior Ezra Lee, co-captain alongside Sandle and guard senior Jayden Bai, said that while it was discouraging to be losing by 20 points, halftime helped to restore his spirit.
“Coach gave us a speech at halftime,” Lee said. “He told us to keep cutting into it and stay together as a team, which motivated me in the second half.”
The third and fourth quarters saw a rotation of players fighting to close the gap. Still, the highlight performance came from forward senior Micah Cowell, who found his form late in the game, sinking two three-pointers, including the final shot of the night, as the clock expired with 36-67 on the board.
Despite the scoreboard, the night served as a sentimental farewell for the seniors and a motivational spark for the program’s returning players.
“It’s kind of sad, I only have one more year after this, so I want to get as many wins as I can before I leave,” Lee said. “But I was just happy for the seniors at the end because they made a lot of shots.”
Ok emphasized that the game provided a blueprint for the offseason.
“The younger guys can take this chance to reflect and evolve as players,” he said. “There’s nothing specific that needs especially more work than others, but we can improve in every aspect of the game, like a better defense and making better shots.”
For players like Lin, the disappointment of the loss has already turned into competitive fire.
“We’re going 8-0 in league next year,” Lin said. “We’re going to show every team why the Lancers rule the Hill.”
