The boys golf team (4-0) went up against Cypress High School (0-4) in an away game at the Navy Destroyer Golf Course in Cypress and won 178-200. The group shot -7 collectively, meaning they scored seven points less than the other team.
“It’s always positive when the boys fire great scores like today,” head coach Scott Enrico said. “Shooting under as a team is sweet, shooting seven under as a team is even sweeter.”
Enrico said his top players of the day were freshman Jansen Baek and junior Brian Koo, who both shot -3 and shared the medalist spot.
“I was encouraged to do better because I was actually defending my three-medalist streak that game,” Koo said.
During the match, Koo said he got off to a steady start and attributed his success to his putting.
“My putting was pretty good that day, and my putts kept dropping as I hit the greens,” Koo said.
He said rather than focusing on the score, he focused on the game itself.
“[I] tried to be more present,” Koo said. “Take each step thoroughly and try to trust your process, rather than thinking of what your score can be in the future.”
Baek said he also tried to ground himself throughout the match.
“When you start to get frustrated, I feel like that really affects your game,” Baek said. “So I tried to stay calm.”
Going into the match, Enrico said that the team approached it like every other competition.
“We always take each league [match] seriously, but when our boys are locked in, watch out,” Enrico said.
Koo said he also felt the same way as his head coach, echoing the same sentiments.
“While our opponents were not that great, it was still a league match, and it was important to do well,” Koo said.
With the second league win and undefeated streak, Enrico said that although he is proud of the effort the team put in, he has one critique.
“It’s hard to improve after a big win like today,” the head coach said. “I do want to see the guys not give [up] strokes like we did.”
Junior Felipe Jikal said he feels differently and evaluates what he could have done better.
“After today, I think I can improve my chipping by practicing new techniques,” Jikal said.
Enrico said he attributes part of the win to his players’ implementation of his new motto, the ‘three Be’s’: be prepared, be focused and be confident.
“They’re playing with confidence, and they know they’re going to win,” Enrico said. “So far, it’s all working out.”
Jikal said he also focuses on the ‘three Be’s’ during practices and competitions.
“[They’ve] helped me stay consistent and stable over the season,” Jikal said.
Going into the next match, Enrico said his expectations for the team haven’t changed.
“We take each match and opponent seriously,” he said. “I just want our guys to have that killer instinct and post great scores again.”
Koo said he felt relieved by the results and focused on the next match.
“It reassured how my thinking process actually worked, and I’m going to try to keep that same mentality in my future game so I can ensure that I get good results,” Koo said.
With the team going undefeated in league play this season, they are currently in a good position to take home the league championship once again.
The boys golf team will compete away against Crean Lutheran High School (2-0) at the Tustin Ranch Golf Course at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14.
