Last Season: The girls basketball team finished with a 0-8 league score and a 14-14 overall record in the Century League. The Lady Lancers did not advance to the CIF-SS playoffs.
Outlook: Byun said his motto is to be better than last year after finishing league last season without a victory — a result he saw as disappointing for the program. Building off last season, the head coach said he hopes to win as many games as possible and continue their winning tradition.
“I feel like we have a great amount of potential,” Byun said. “They are all great kids, but we just [have] to become better basketball players; so, my hope is that we can maximize our basketball abilities.”
Byun said he plans to prepare the team through intense practice by training at a harder level than the actual game. He said the goals are to become sharper, create stronger team chemistry and improve offensive competitiveness, an area the team struggled with last year.
“I would love for our practices to be as competitive, if not more competitive than games,” he said.
Among the tough league, the head coach said teams such as Troy High School (6-2), Sonora High School (4-4), Yorba Linda High School (6-2) and Brea Olinda High School (8-0) are difficult opponents for the Lady Lancers.
Point and shooting guard Jones said Troy High School will be the team’s toughest opponent because of its new coach and a strong roster.
“[Troy High School] is back in our league and has a pretty good team put together this year, so I’m really nervous and excited about that game,” Jones said.
Small forward Sexton said the Lady Lancers have improved since last year, using one of the team’s strengths: enhanced teamwork.
“We have [many] returners, so we know a lot of the plays,” Sexton said. “We [have] a lot of team chemistry.”
Alongside strong team chemistry, Jones said the team’s uniform mindset contributes to their success.
“We all have the same goal pretty much, which is to win,” she said. “So as long as we all are on the same page, I would say that’s a big strength that we have.”
Regarding the upcoming season, Byun said he expects a good season and hopes that the Lady Lancers will give their best effort for every game and practice.
“I don’t know how many games we can win, and I don’t know how many games we could lose,” the head coach said. “But to control the way we approach the game and practices are the only things we can really focus on, so I anticipate us to be able to do that day in and day out, even after a win or loss.”
Most recently, Sunny Hills secured its first league win against Brea Olinda High School on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with a final score of 46-30, improving its season record to 1-4.
The Lady Lancers will play against the Mustangs at Yorba Linda High School on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 5:30 p.m.
