With the crowning of the 2025 prom king, The Accolade’s Spotlight team reporter sophomore Kyuwon Han conducted a Q&A with senior Mohamad Ibrahim to share his experience and motivations to achieve the title.
Question: Why did you decide to run for the prom king title?
Answer: I honestly did it for my friends. They wanted to see me as prom king, and the girl I went with won as well. So it was kind of nice, cause prom king and queen are pretty cool.
Q: How did you feel when you first heard your name announced as prom king?
A: It was shocking because I thought Chris [Martinez] was going to win. So when they said my name, I thought it was so nice.
Q: How did you prepare for the prom court nomination and/or the king election, and did you expect to win?
A: For the nomination, I was kind of surprised at the beginning, but I kind of knew it because all of my friends were talking about it. Then for the elections at prom, my friends pulled out their phones and started recording our reactions. It was pretty funny. Honestly, I didn’t do anything to prepare.
Q: What was the most exciting part of the prom crowning ceremony for you?
A: Definitely walking up the stairs and getting crowned. It was pretty cool.
Q: Can you describe the moment you were crowned? What was going through your mind?
A: It was very nice because my friend, Aaron Green, put the crown on my head, and he was telling me earlier that he wanted to put the crown on my head. So it was pretty nice to reflect on that moment.
Q: What did you do after you were announced the prom king? Any after-parties or celebrations? If so, with whom, and what did you do?
A: It was just me and my friends, and after we went back to my friend’s house to have food.
Q: What does being a prom king mean to you personally?
A: I feel like a prom king was supposed to be the most deserving of the event. But I feel like people now base it on popularity. So, for me, it means popularity, but what it should really mean is who deserves to be the king of that prom of the year.
Q: Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model throughout this journey?
A: Coach Jacob Holloway was such an inspiration. He’s a hard worker. In the off-season, when we did track, he was very persistent on practicing and getting the work done before the season started.
Q: What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a prom king in the future?
A: Honestly, you have to want it. Being popular or not popular doesn’t matter. As long as you want it, then strive for it.
Q: What does prom symbolize for you, and how do you think it brings your school together?
A: For seniors, it’s more like a last dance of high school for all the seniors to enjoy. Everyone is going to be separated, and not a lot of people are going to see each other anymore. So it’s a last dance before the end of the school year.
Q: What’s next for you after this achievement? Do you see it influencing your future plans in any way?
A: Being a prom king isn’t really going to affect my life, but it’s pretty nice to reflect on because when I get older, I would say I won the prom king for 2025, which is nice. Next, I’m trying to make it to CIF.
Q: How would you describe your high school journey now that it’s ending on this high note?
A: It’s amazing. I can’t stress it enough. I keep telling everyone that senior year moves by fast. I still remember the beginning of the school year, so for everyone, make the most of it. Go to every dance.
