A $20 Google Play Store gift card will be the top prize today, Dec. 7, when Sunny Hills students compete in a Brawl Stars tournament that will be played remotely and organized by the eSports club.
“I would say the purpose of the tournament is to grow the eSports community at Sunny,” said senior Angel Rodriguez, eSports club secretary. “There are lots of students that maybe don’t know there’s a large community of gamers at the school, so I hope that this tournament will introduce them to it.”
The 4 p.m. competition will start through an online call in the club Discord server, eSports co-president Olivia Kim said.
Gaming and coding teacher Sonya Joyce, who’s also the eSports adviser, will join the Discord call to ensure that students are in the correct voice and text channels and help with any other technical issues, Rodriguez said.
“I’m so excited to see who’s going to win,” Joyce said.
Anyone from Sunny Hills can sign up through the Google Form link, which is in the eSports Instagram account’s bio (@sunnyhillsesports) and the Discord server under announcements. The digital sign-up platform requires participants to give their player IDs and either list their teammates or ask to be placed in a random team by Rodriguez.
The teams consist of three students.
They then play against each other in a bracket system to see who wins the first place $20 Google Play Store gift card, he said.
As of Friday, Dec. 6, afternoon, eight teams of three — 24 students — have signed up, and only one team can aim to claim the grand prize, Rodriguez said.
“I am really excited for the Brawl Stars tournament,” said eSports club co-president senior Miles Holden, who observed that several of his peers have been asking for eSports to set up the event. “I started playing it back in 2019, and it was one of my favorite mobile games, so I’m glad to see others at Sunny Hills enjoy it as well.”
