American pizzas are often known for their salty profile, featuring savory toppings such as the popular pepperoni and cheese (think Costco) that add to their signature taste.
For those looking to try something different, Korea Town Pizza Co. offers a new palette inspired by South Korean cuisine.
Located at 5326 Beach Boulevard in Buena Park, the establishment that opened May 2024 boasts a variety of Korean-flavored foods, including salads, pasta and pizzas.
Alongside its bestselling pies like the Golden Potato; which can be ordered in sizes small ($12.00), medium ($21.00) and large ($26.00), and the Korean marinated beef also known as bulgogi, the diner also offers American classics like pepperoni ($19.00) and cheese ($17.00).
During a visit to the restaurant on Friday, Oct. 11, Kimchos ($16.00) and large half-and-half Meat Heads and bulgogi pizza ($28.00) were ordered bringing the final cost of the meal to $52.41
Unique to the restaurant, Kimchos are a blend of the traditional Korean side dish Kimchi and nachos. Topped with guacamole, egg and bulgogi, the fusion of flavors make for a unique appetizer, showcasing the restaurant’s creative approach to combining Korean and American cuisines.
The menu offers a choice to split one pizza into two flavors. The half-and-half Meat Heads and bulgogi pie feature one side loaded with savory pepperoni, ham and sausage and the other topped with tender bulgogi marinated with sauce.
The all-beef meal delivers a robust taste that satisfies traditional cravings. In contrast, the other half provides a sweet depth that complements the savory meat. The half-and-half option is ideal for those who want to explore a range of flavors or even enjoy the comfort of a classic pizza.
The greatest difference between American and Korean style lies in the latter’s milder flavor profile, often featuring a more balanced approach with less emphasis on saltiness. On one half, the bulgogi is made sweeter with sauce. Even the Meat Heads’ toppings, typically bold and salty, are cooked to be fresher and umami, likely appealing to those who enjoy a lighter taste.
Customers can choose between one of five crust flavors — gold (regular), cheese, mocha bun, hashbrown and broccoli mousse – at no additional charge. This order has the mocha bun crust, which proves to be a standout of the meal. With its sweet and rich flavor, the mocha custard that fills its interior elevates the overall taste of the entire pizza. The exterior is soft yet crunchy, perfectly balancing between chewiness and crispness.
In contrast to the diverse flavor profiles of its dishes, the restaurant itself has a cozy interior. The furniture consists of wooden tables and bright red chairs with soft fairy lights and modern art posters hanging on the walls, creating a welcoming ambiance.
Upon walking in, customers can see these posters, fake plants and a row of colorful collectible figures standing above the cashier. These pops of color, paired with the white walls and wooden tables, allow for a cohesive, modern feel.
Overall, Korea Town Pizza offers a fusion dining experience that successfully brings together the best of both American and Korean worlds. Though none of the dishes are salty at all, the inventive menu invites customers to step out of their comfort zones while still enjoying familiar tastes.
With its warm ambiance, diverse menu and commitment to flavor, this is the ideal destination for those looking to experience a slice of South Korea for themselves.
