This year’s “Interstellar”-themed prom will take place at the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, a first for Sunny Hills, on Saturday, April 5.
Based on consultation between Associated Student Body [ASB] adviser David Fenstermaker and the junior ASB class, they chose the venue with a DJ company a few years prior.
“We sort of made a deal with the company to do last year’s, this year’s and a couple of options for next year all at the same time,” Fenstermaker said. “In this year’s case, we had a couple venue options in the last few years and in consultation with the DJ company we were put on a rotation to get us the Aquarium last year, this venue this year and then two more venues including one that this year’s juniors saw on their tour.”
Sunny Hills will reserve the transportation center, so security has to direct the public to the train areas through the back of the station, the adviser said.
“The public can access all of the train areas that are behind but are prohibited from getting close to our area,” he said.
Senior Madelyn Boyd said although last year’s location — Long Beach’s Aquarium of the Pacific — is hard to top, she remains excited to visit the unique venue.
“I’ve never actually heard of this year’s prom venue, but from pictures online, it’s really pretty, and it matches the theme well,” Boyd said. “Last year’s prom venue raised the standard super high for the following years, but I’m hopeful and excited to have our prom where it is.”
The ASB announced the prom theme, “Interstellar,” through a teaser video presented during the second-period spring sports and elections assembly in the gym on Thursday, March 6.
“We took a lot of inspiration from different movies, and then we kind of leaned more towards the space idea,” said ASB junior class president Kevin Hur, who is the head of the prom committee.
Upon arrival, students can expect to see two photobooths, arcade games and Polaroid cameras. This year, the ASB planned new attractions, such as caricature artists and Auntie Anne’s pretzels.
“We wanted to do different activities that we could have at prom to give something to do besides just eating, and we thought that the caricature artist is something fun that students can participate in,” Hur said. “For Polaroid pictures, we took pictures that people can take, so it’s just something memorable for them.”
Senior Kathleen Handley looks forward to her last prom because of the venue and theme.
“I really like that there’s actually food this year like the pretzels, and I think the caricatures are actually going to be pretty fun,” Handley said. “I’ve seen pictures of the venue, and it looks really nice.”
The prom court was announced on Monday, March 31, based on the 5-Star App, where students nominated five girls and five boys. Students can vote for the Prom King and Queen at the venue through provided Chromebooks or with their phones.
The event will run from 7-11 p.m., with amenities available throughout the entire duration.
As of Tuesday, March 25, over 400 tickets have been sold. Fenstermaker said he expects it to be a popular event.
Students purchased tickets on the SH webstore starting from Thursday, March 6, for $100 with an ASB Gold Card and $110 without. Prices increased by $10 each week after, and students can purchase tickets this week until Saturday, April 5, for $120 with an ASB Gold Card and $130 without.
