In a clean sweep, the Sunny Hills girls volleyball team defeated Bonita High School 3-0 at a home game on Sept. 10, advancing the team’s record  to 2-4.

Sunny Hills’ head coach Amanda Donaldson said the win was an indication that the team had gotten over its recent four-game losing streak: the most recent loss being against El Modena High School on Sept. 4.

“I was stoked we pulled out a decent win,” Donaldson said. “We were really finding what worked and started understanding certain strategies to different offensive and defensive schemes better.”

Currently having two starters — seniors setter and right side hitter Jasmine Tan and outside hitter and right side  hitter Kayla Cho — out from injury, the team had plenty of motivation going into the game against Bonita High School.

Outside hitter junior Elyse Yoon felt that by having an underdog mentality, the team could have a focused mindset and come out on top.

“We understood that we weren’t the tallest or most physical team out there but we all have that deep passion and determination to push through and fight,” she said. “In our match against Bonita, we clearly showed that energy all throughout the game.”

Not only did the Lady Lancers show energy, but they also took an early lead by winning the first set 25-15 and clinching the second one 25-22 with defensive specialist senior Cambria Acheson clinching it with a spike into the opposing side.

The Lady Lancers then finished off the match with a 25-18 third set score.

Setter junior Maddie Rumenap said the game was a great note to end on before the start of league  Sept.16 against Sonora High School.

“The win gave us more motivation to know that if we push ourselves and find a way, we can beat anyone,” Rumenap said.

Donaldson said the Bonita match along with a two-day tournament at Whittier High School the weekend before league will prepare them for the rest of the season.

“I know the girls are very excited for league to come, and they can’t wait to bring the heat,” she said.
