As part of a fund-raising drive called “Miracle Minute,” Sunny Hills faculty and students raised $2,450 last week for Breast Cancer Angels, which in turn will pass the funds to a Fullerton breast cancer patient.

“The Miracle Minute [worked] well,” principal Allen Whitten said. “[I am] so proud of ASB and all of our students.”

Organized by the Associated Student Body, the fund-raiser was held Oct. 18 during period two classes, which were given 60 seconds for students to put in coins and dollar bills to support Breast Cancer Angels, a Los Alamitos-based organization dedicated to assisting families affected by the disease known to have killed an estimated 42,260 people last year, according to cancer.net.

In his weekly digital newsletter that was sent out via email later that Friday, Whitten announced that the classes raised $2,950 in total. The football team also contributed $500 from purchases of pink socks for the team’s pink out game against La Habra Oct. 18.

The funds were handed over to Breast Cancer Angels during halftime of the Oct. 18 Sunny Hills home football game against La Habra at Buena Park High School’s new turf stadium.

According to the Oct. 21 morning announcements during period two, 92% of all classes reached the target of $10, and the average amount collected in each class was $31.

Science teacher Andrew Colomac’s Advanced Placement Chemistry class raised $136.42, the most of any class, followed by social science teacher Robert Bradburn’s International Baccalaureate Economics HL1 class at $90.03 and world language teacher Scott Griswold’s Spanish 3 class with $82.36.

“I am very proud of my class,” Colomac said. “They have big hearts and want to help.”

No information was available as of Oct. 21 if Colomac’s period two students will receive a prize from the ASB.

Last year, Sunny Hills raised $2,570 during the 2018 edition of the Miracle Minute.
